When you’re moving, you need to have an alternate plan for just about everything. The process of moving should be simple: pack, move and unpack. But so many things can go wrong that you’re better off preparing just in case. One of the issues that can pop up is storage. However, the moving company you hired may have a very helpful solution.
When Your New Place Isn’t Ready Yet
It’s always good to have some overlap between your old and new homes. The new home or apartment should be ready for moving in before you move out of your old place. The new lease should start before you move, too. Sometimes, though, it just doesn’t work out that way, and you have to find somewhere to put your belongings while you stay in a hotel. The easiest solution is storage. But how you go about finding that storage can be the difference between a seamless transition and a lot of hassle.
If you rent a unit at an independent storage facility, you’ll most likely have to pay by the month. You’ll also need to head over to the storage unit at least twice. What’s more is that you’ll be responsible for monitoring things in the unit to ensure they stay in good condition.
But if you’re working with a moving company that offers storage, your move becomes a lot easier. The moving company can pick up your belongings and take them over to the company’s own storage facility. When your new place is finally ready, the company can bring them right over to your new home. You won’t have to go over to the company’s storage facility at all. Many moving companies allow for shorter storage terms, too, which can save you money.
When You Rented Terrible Storage
Maybe you’re ahead of the game and have already arranged for storage with an independent facility. That sounds good, but you’re not out of the woods yet. Many storage facilities recommend that you rent in person so that you can see the condition of the facility. However, if you are moving to another city and had to rent the unit online, the unit might not be in great shape. Or, it could be too small.
If that happens, call your moving company immediately and see if it has its own storage facility. You never want to store your belongings somewhere that’s dirty or that looks like it doesn’t offer adequate protection.
