Post-Move Maintenance Checklist for New Homes

Moving into a new place comes with plenty of questions, and some simple maintenance tips may slip under your radar as you focus on unpacking and getting settled into your new space. With this post-move maintenance checklist, you can address any issues early and set yourself up for success.

Check the Faucets

A surprise water leak is never a good thing. Spare yourself some stress by opening all the cabinets, checking under sinks for dampness, wet pipes or visible water. Make sure the plumbing and faucets work well, including the handles. If anything is loose or leaking, schedule a repair.

Inspect the Cabinets

Check out the bathroom and kitchen cabinets for signs of damage and loose hardware. Some issues may be merely cosmetic, but others could need servicing. If you have a landlord or apartment maintenance team, bring up any issues you notice early on, so they don’t hold you responsible for any issues that arise over the course of your lease.

Test the Smoke and C02 Detectors

Your property should have a smoke detector and C02 detector; if it doesn’t, consider installing them yourself, or reaching out to the property manager if you have one. If the detectors are installed properly, press the “test” button on the devices to make sure they’re working and don’t need their batteries changed. To be on the safe side, consider swapping out the old battery with a new one.

Seal and Doors and Windows

A simple weather-stripping kit can help you patch up any loose holes and gaps around your doors and windows, leading to a comfier, cozier space. Even if it’s summer, sealing these entry points can improve insulation, which reduces strain on your AC.

Test All Appliances

Run a load in the dishwasher, make sure the fridge and freezer cool well, and ensure that the oven, stove and microwave are all operational. Move onto your washing machine; run a test load there, and then make sure the dryer is working well.

As you run each appliance, check for:

  • Strange noises
  • Faulty start-ups
  • Poor performance
  • Short cycling

Why Early Maintenance Matters

Tackle any issues as soon as possible to avoid struggles down the road. If there are some issues that need fixing, it’s always better to tackle them the first week after moving in. Even minor problems, like a leaky faucet, are worth repairing because maintenance will prevent issues from worsening into more damaging, expensive repairs.
